Metro Manila Film Fest 2016 – Preview

The Metro Manila Film Festival announced the entries in its annual Christmas season movie festival this November, and just by looking at the entries, one can say that change has come.

Here’s a sneak peak at what movies will premiere in this year’s MMFF:

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2 is a sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2011 movie, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. While the first movie was a satire on the Filipino Indie film scene and foreign award shows, the sequel focuses on mainstream Filipino movies.

The official synopsis reads: “Eugene Domingo appears as a fictionalized version of herself once again, and she’s ready to make a new movie with the help of her team, Rainier, Jocelyn, and Lennon.

They discuss her comeback and head to Baguio to film the movie, where Eugene starts making absurd suggestions to change the original realistic script by adding elements of Pinoy comedy.”

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2 stars Eugene Domingo, Kean Cipriano, Joel Torre, Jericho Rosales, and is directed by Marlon Rivera

Die Beautiful revolves around the story of Trisha, a transgender woman who competes in beauty contests. As part of her request before her death, Trisha’s wish was to remain beautiful.

Die Beautiful recently won the Audience Award in the Tokyo International Film Festival in November.

Die Beautiful stars Paolo Ballesteros, Joel Torre, Gladys Reyes, Luis Alandy, and is directed Jun Robles Lana.

Nora Aunor stars in this sociopolitical flick which follows a family and how it deals with hooded people who are involved in extra-judicial killings and other abuses in Philippine Society.

Oro is a film that centers around a mining community that is threatened by an armed group. The movie also focuses on the effects on the members of the community despite the threats made by the armed group.

The movie stars Sandino Martin, Arrian Labios, Sue Prado, Cedrick Juan, and is directed by Alvin Yapan.

Saving Sally is not your typical Filipino romantic comedy movie as it infuses animation and live action movie.

The movie centers around Marty’s unrequited love towards his best friend Sally, and how Marty sees the world around him.

Saving Sally stars Rhian Ramos and Enzo Marcos. The movie is directed by Avid Liongoren.

The official synopsis of the movie reads:

“In 1947 those aspiring to be a priest are sent to a remote convent to live in seclusion (seklusyon) on the last day of their training. The purpose is to shield them from the evil of the world. The plot thickens when a mysterious young girl comes to the convent but the question is whether she is really sent by God or by the devil. This is the challenge that awaits the candidates.”

The movie is directed by the master of Filipino horror movies, Erik Matti.

Seklusyon stars Rhed Bustamante, Neil Ryan Sese, Ronnie Alonte.

Sunday Beauty Queen is a Filipino documentary that follows Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong as they embark to take part in an annual beauty pageant.

Very little is known about this film, yet people have been buzzing about it ever since a surprise trailer was shown late last year/early this year. Speculation has it that this film may take place within the Cloverfield universe, and that the characters in this film are survivors of the Cloverfield movie.

With J.J. Abrams at the helm of this movie, we can’t help but recommend it, after all the last time J.J. Abrams kept a movie under wraps like this we got an unexpected treat in the form of Cloverfield. Hopefully this movie surprises the audience once again.
