(MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR FOLLOW. READ ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE)

The Avengers on Titan ALMOST get the Infinity Gauntlet Off

We pick things up at Titan, Thanos’ Home Planent, where the Avengers: Dr. Strange, Iron-Man, Spider-Man along with the Guardians of the Galaxy: StarLord, Mantis, Drax and Nebula catch the Mad Titan Thanos by surprise. Working as a team, they almost get the Infinity Gauntlet off from him.

The plan works and they have Thanos on the ropes. However, thanks to Star-lord losing his cool and lashing out over the death of Gamora, Thanos is able to break free of Mantis and Strange’s bonds and recover.

(Thanks Quill! You couldn’t have held still for like 2 seconds? It not like the fate of the Universe depended on it or anything. Oh wait, it DID!)

Dr. Strange gives Thanos the Time Stone in Exchange for Iron-Man’s Life

After their initial plan to get the Infinity Gauntlet off from Thanos fails. (Really, thanks Star-Lord!) The Avengers/Guardians are all separated and promptly defeated by the Mad Titan and the might of 4 Infinity Stones.

Even Iron-Man is bested by Thanos and is stabbed with his own nano-machine blade. As Thanos threatens to use the Gauntlet on Iron-man, an injured Doctor Strange offers the Time stone to Thanos in exchange for Tony’s life.

It would be interesting to note here that prior to this battle, Doctor Strange used the Time Stone to view all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict. Strange remarked afterwards that out of millions of scenarios, they only win one. It would make sense that this bargain for Tony’s life factors into that outcome.

Thanos Arrives On Earth

With only one Infinity Stone remaining, Thanos doesn’t waste time dealing with the Titan Group and promptly teleports to Earth. There he is met with resistance in the form of Bruce Banner, Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine, Black Panther, Falcon, Vision and Scarlet Witch. They all prove no match for Thanos and the 5 Stones and he proceeds relatively unimpeded towards the Mind Stone in Vision’s Head.

Scarlet Witch Destroys the Mind Stone

The last line of Avengers on Earth manages to buy Scarlet Witch the time she needs to destroy the Mind Stone on Vision’s head, obliterating both in the process. It would appear that at the very least, Thanos would not have the last stone to complete the Infinity Gauntlet.

Until…

Thanos uses the Time Stone to recover the Mind Stone

Using the Time Stone that he obtained from Dr. Strange,  Thanos turns back time to reassemble the Vision before plucking the newly reformed Mind Stone from his head. He places the Stone on the Infinity Gauntlet and it is finally complete.

Thor Impales Thanos with the Stormbreaker

Thor Stormbreaker.jpg

At the very last possible moment, Thor manages to emerge from the sky and land a near fatal blow to Thanos chest with his new axe, Stormbreaker. The God of Thunder pushes the axe deeper to the wounded Titan but Thanos manages to remark “You should’ve gone for the head.”

Then…

Thanos Snaps His Fingers

Thanos-Snap.jpg

Despite Stormbreaker digging deep into Thanos’ chest, He still manages to snap his fingers resulting in a blinding flash of light.

Earlier in the movie, Gamora has said that her father Thanos wants to balance the Universe by eradicating half of it from existence. She adds that, with the power of a complete Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos could do so with the snap of his fingers.

This is that snap.

Thanos Has Vision Of A Young Gamora

This is easily the most confusing bit in the whole climax of the movie. After Thanos snaps his fingers and a bright flash of light fills the screen, we see him seemingly transported to an otherworldly plane. In it that only other thing is a sort of pagoda where a young Gamora awaits him.

She asks him if he did it. He responds yes.

She asks him what did it cost. He says “everything”

The inclusion and timing of this vision is very odd and serves to keep the ending somewhat vague. Some of us here at Geekend Gladiators think that this was just a delirious fever dream as Thanos confronts the weight of his actions in his mind. Others think that this might hint at the idea that Thanos has died, whether from the Stormbreaker blow or from the Gauntlet itself. He did describe his purge as random and if Thanos were to have been selected, we think he would have been at peace with it.

The Avengers Fall

After the vision, We see the scene return to the forest where Thor has the Stormbreaker in Thanos. The Infinity Gauntlet is shown spent, melted and mangled as if the sheer force and power of the Stones being used in the Snap had shorted it out.

Thanos was still able to conjure a portal, however, to escape to parts unknown.

Then the Avengers start to fade to ash. First is the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes. Followed by the Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and Groot.

On Titan, All of the Guardians dissipate into nothing. Drax, Mantis and Star-Lord all fade away. Alarmingly, Dr. Strange and Spider-Man fade off as well, the latter in especially heart-breaking fashion.

At the end of the movie, the only Heroes left standing are Captain America Iron-Man, War Machine, Black Widow, Bruce Banner, Thor, Nebula, Rocket Raccoon, Okoye, and M’Baku.

Thanos Rests

Eerily echoing the conversation he had with Doctor Strange earlier in the movie,  Thanos finally “rests and watches the Sun rise on a grateful Universe”. He believes he has just save the Universe from extinction. He is now free and at peace. With his life’s grim goal over and done with, Thanos is able to breathe a sigh of relief.
