All eyes are now on the twenty-eight year-old Kairi Sane, nicknamed “The Pirate Princess” from World Wonder Ring Stardom promotion in Japan, after winning the Mae Young Classic competition finals against Shayna Baszler. She is one of the most celebrated women’s wrestlers of the modern era, and she will soon get a shot at the vacant NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Houston.
1. Ambassador of Yamaguchi
Kairi Sane or Kaori Housako in real life is a Hikari, Yamaguchi local and was born in September 23, 1988. In 2016, it was announced in Japan that she’s recognized by the local government of Hikari, Yamaguchi as an ambassador. She has been actively representing the city and she has been an inspiration most especially to young aspiring wrestlers. In one of her local tours last year, Kairi had the opportunity to go back to a Yakiniku restaurant in her hometown where she used to work when she was in high school and her mini homecoming was warmly received by the locals as well as the restaurant owner.
2. Pirate Princess
Before being involved in wrestling, Kairi was heavily focused in yachting. She competed in both intercollegiate and national competitions, representing Honsei University. She also took part in world championships and her goal was to eventually compete in the Olympics.
3. She Got Discovered as an Actress
After getting her degree in Japanese Literature from Honsei University, Kairi pursued a different path. She started working on acting gigs and one of her acting roles required her to literally perform as a professional wrestling heel. Fuka, Stardom’s general manager, was impressed by her performance and invited her to one of the promotion’s shows. Kairi immediately got interested with the business that she immediately started training as a wrestler in 2011.
4. Concussion Issues Delayed Her Deal With WWE
According to the site Wrestling Observer, Kairi was offered her first WWE contract in the summer of 2016. Kairi, had some hesitation because she had experienced major concussion issues over the past few years, and she was worried that she wouldn’t be able to pass WWE’s strict medical examinations. Her fear was probably caused by Daniel Bryan’s early retirement after suffering from serious concussions. Fortunately, she has now signed with NXT and that meant that her previous concerns were dumbfounded.
5. Her Blood Type is O
Blood type is considered to be an important thing in determining a characteristic of a person in some East Asian countries. According to her profile in Stardom, Kairi’s blood type is O. This information is also something she confirmed in one of her interviews with RollingStone. She said that having O as her blood type means she’s friendly, casual and can get along with everybody. She also added that this is what she wants to convey with American people.
Denise Aquino is the Gladiator’s Vinyl Valkyrie. She’s been following the WWE since it’s glory days in the 90’s. Find her on Twitter @moreaurora 😉
