It’s Crazy Crackpot Theory Time! Spider-Man Homecoming Edition

This one I felt like I had to exclude from the article I made last week because honestly, its a little too tin-foil hat-y for my tastes. To subscribe to my theory would take several leaps of logic, grasping at straws and several jabs at happenstance. But on the off-chance that you’re fine with all of that, then down the rabbit hole we go.

So we found quite the generous helping of Easter Eggs and References in the trailers of the much-awaited Spider-Man: Homecoming. One of which was this scene:

We’ve pointed out the Physics Lesson about pendulums and waves, as well as the reference to mild-mannered Bruce Banner to the top right of the white board. However, something just didn’t sit right with this Gladiator about the whole scene. The scientists don’t appear in any sort of order and are listed in quite a random pattern. On a hunch, I decided to track down the names of the scientists in the decorations above. It took quite some tedious bit of research but I finally managed to match names to all the faces. From left to right, they are as follows:

scientists.jpg

  • Charles Darwin,
  • Enrico Fermi,
  • Lisa Meitner,
  • Alessandro Volta,
  • Galileo Galilei,
  • Albert Einstein,
  • Antoine Lavoister,
  • Niel Bohr,
  • Nikola Tesla,
  • Isaac Newton,
  • Marie Curie,
  • Bruce Banner.

Taking the Last Names of all the scientists gives us a series of letters that seem to have no useful configurations of, unless DFMVGELBTNCB means anything to you. However, using the First Names of the scientists we arrive with CELAGAANNIMB which seems to be an easier collection of letters to work with. Now, as anyone who knows me would tell you, word puzzles and anagrams may not necessarily be my strong suit. So I did what any self-respecting millennial would in this day and age: Take to Social Media.

Thanks to friend of the Gladiators, Kathleen Mae, within moments I had my answer: A Cannibal Gem

Now to those keeping up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it should come as no surprise that there has been an overarching subplot in each of the movies regarding Thanos and the Infinity Stones (or Infinity Gems as referred to in the comics). Out of the Six Gems, only One has yet to be revealed: The Soul Gem. The Gem is considered to be the most powerful of the bunch and is the most varied in its abilities. It can reveal information by peering into another’s soul; trap souls inside itself in an idyllic world; attack another being’s soul; and protect the wielder’s soul from harm, just to name a few of its abilities.

Oh, It is also sentient and has an insatiable, vampiric thirst for other souls, including its wielder (Read: Cannibalism).

So could this long, labyrinthine goose chase have led us to the Soul Gem? So far in the promotional material for Spider-Man: Homecoming, there hasn’t been the slightest hint that the Infinity Stones will make any sort of appearance.  Could this be the first jab at that? Will we see our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man interact with the Soul Stone in shape or manner? We’ll just have to wait until the movie comes swinging over to Cinemas on July, 7, 2017.
