Pick of the Geek (09 – 15 May 2016)

Pick of the Geek is back with an all new list of things to watch out for this Geeky week May 9-15.

As always with our Pick of the Geek, we provide you a list of what’s what for this week in the world of geekdom.

black panther 2
By: Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze (Marvel)

Fans of the break-out star of Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, have rejoiced over one of the best debuts in this All-New, All-Different Marvel era with one of the most stellar story-telling in issue #1. In this issue, the darkest chapter of the Black Panther mythos continues as Wakanda crumbles from within. T’Challa will be challenged by two mysterious women in this revolution.

archie 8
By: Mark Waid, Veronica Fish (Archie Comics)

It’s campaign season in Riverdale, and Mr. Lodge has announced his candidacy for mayor. Will Mr. Lodge save the town, or will he destroy it? Seems pretty straight-forward for this installment of Archie, but of course, expect some twists and turns from this critically-acclaimed title.

batman 52
By: James Tynion IV, Rafael Albuquerque (DC Comics)

Batman #52 serves as the transition from our favorite creative team (Snyder and Capullo), and the New 52 era to the DC Reborn era and Batman’s newest creative team. It’s unclear though what the story would be, it being the last issue before the reboot/relaunch, but expect it to be one that sets-up the new universe and things to come for the Dark Knight.

superman 52
By: Peter J. Tomasi, Fernando Pasarin (DC Comics)

This is it! The story that has been teased and awaited for in the past few weeks. New 52 Superman and Pre-New 52 Superman finally meet face-to-face. The two Supermen are brought together to face an evil, the catch is, one of them may fall in order to save those that are close and dearest to them.

With a cliffhanger like last week’s “Rupture” episode, we couldn’t just leave this week’s The Flash out of this list.

Barry’s death/disappearance is front and center this week as the S.T.A.R. Labs team must figure out a way to stop Girder, an old enemy, from attacking Central City. Barry, on the other hand, fights to return to his old life.

The reveal in last week’s episode have our heroes on the verge of defeat and it seems that nothing can stop Vandal Savage from ruling the world and killing Rip Hunter’s family along the way.

Having knowledge of the capture of half of the team, Sara takes over the Waverider; Kendra and Carter, on the other hand, are reunited; and Snart decides that he wants to be a hero after all. Tune in to this week’s penultimate episode.

Following the previous episode, Penny and Leonard are set to celebrate their marriage anew, in front of their families and friends. What follows, though, is chaos when Leonard’s recently divorced parents and Sheldon’s religious mother meet. On the other side, Raj and Wolowitz think the government is after them when they are contacted about their guidance system.

Of course, we chose to include this on our list since this will be the finale for Season 9.

The Philippines will finally get to see IP Man 3 in cinemas this week. Following the exploits of martial-arts master, Ip Man, the movie is set in 1959 in Hong Kong where he must protect his hometown when a crooked property developer and his gang attempt to seize control of the local real estate. Expect fists to fly and bodies get beaten to a pulp in this movie.

In what has been described by Geekend Gladiator Phoebe, Equals is pretty much “Equilibrium” but with a love story.

The movie is set in a dystopian future where human emotions have been eradicated and everyone lives in peace. A new disease, however, surfaces and everything changes for Silas (Hoult) and becomes drawn to his co-worker Nia (Stewart), who also becomes infected but is hiding her condition. To survive, both of them must help one another and escape together.

The final installment to the hit videogame franchise is set for release this week on the PS4.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End follows Nathan Drake in his quest to help his brother Sam as they embark on a race against time in pursuit of the Libertalia and its much-storied pirate treasure.

The game that popularized the first-person shooters is back this week on the Xbox One, PS4, and on PC. From the game play itself, you can expect some of the most explosive and gruesome FPS game around. Make sure to pick the game up for you hardcore FPS gamers.

So there you have it, the whats-what of things to watch out for this geeky week.
