Pick of the Geek (18-24 January 2016)

5th wave

This week promises to be a big one as some of our favorite TV shows are back after the Christmas break. Also, a much awaited debut of a particular superhero show premieres this week. On the same note, it looks to be another big week in the realm of comic books.

So here are the highlights for this week.

TV

THE FLASH “Potential Energy”

If you’ve seen the preview you’d have the same feeling as we have right now. This week looks bleak for our hero as Patty gets sucked into this whole Zoom mess. Will Patty make it out alive? We’ll see.

The Flash airs on Wednesday (Philippine time).

ARROW “Blood Debts”

Arrow left us hanging before the Christmas break, and oh such teaser/hanger that they left us with. This week, we get right back to it as we see the events that transpire after the ambush on Oliver and Felicity’s limo.

Could Felicity be the one in that grave, or is this another one of those red herrings? Find out this Thursday.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW “Humanity’s Last Hope”

The much-awaited, much-teased spin-off of the Arrow and Flash shows will finally air this Friday!

Based on the promo alone, this looks to be one of the more interesting superhero shows to premiere. The fact that this would be the first team-oriented superhero show in the Arrowverse has our interests piqued, and if that doesn’t get you going, the addition of Captain Cold might just.

Legends of Tomorrow premieres on Friday.

HEROES REBORN “Project Reborn”

For all the flak that this series has received, it’s finale is still worth highlighting. While it may not have been the needed boost for the Heroes franchise, the series still managed to make things interesting. The whole end of the world event finally culminates this week, and we get to see whether our Heroes get to save the world or not.

The Finale airs on Friday (Philippine time).

COMICS

BATMAN #48

Batman (Gordon) continues his battle against Mr. Bloom, this time Mr. Bloom’s seeds have grown into an army and now seems to turn Gotham against Batman. Meanwhile, that teaser in the previous issue continues as this “stranger” that Bruce Wayne meets may just be the kicker that would start a series of events no one can stop.

MOVIES

THE BIG SHORT

Based on the Michael Lewis book of the same name, the movie follows four men who foresaw the impending financial crisis. Having knowledge of this, these four men decide to devise a plan to make money out of it.

The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carrell. Opens in Philippine cinemas this 20 January 2016.

THE FIFTH WAVE

Based on the young-adult novel of the same name, we follow Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz) as she tries to survive an impending alien invasion while trying to find her brother and save her.

Positive reviews have emerged and have compared the movie to The Hunger Games franchise.

The Fifth Wave premieres on 20 January 2016.
