Metro Manila Film Fest 2016 – Preview

The Metro Manila Film Festival announced the entries in its annual Christmas season movie festival this November, and just by looking at the entries, one can say that change has come.

Here’s a sneak peak at what movies will premiere in this year’s MMFF:

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2 is a sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2011 movie, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. While the first movie was a satire on the Filipino Indie film scene and foreign award shows, the sequel focuses on mainstream Filipino movies.

The official synopsis reads: “Eugene Domingo appears as a fictionalized version of herself once again, and she’s ready to make a new movie with the help of her team, Rainier, Jocelyn, and Lennon.

They discuss her comeback and head to Baguio to film the movie, where Eugene starts making absurd suggestions to change the original realistic script by adding elements of Pinoy comedy.”

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2 stars Eugene Domingo, Kean Cipriano, Joel Torre, Jericho Rosales, and is directed by Marlon Rivera

Die Beautiful revolves around the story of Trisha, a transgender woman who competes in beauty contests. As part of her request before her death, Trisha’s wish was to remain beautiful.

Die Beautiful recently won the Audience Award in the Tokyo International Film Festival in November.

Die Beautiful stars Paolo Ballesteros, Joel Torre, Gladys Reyes, Luis Alandy, and is directed Jun Robles Lana.

Nora Aunor stars in this sociopolitical flick which follows a family and how it deals with hooded people who are involved in extra-judicial killings and other abuses in Philippine Society.

Kabisera stars Nora Aunor, Ricky Davao, JC De Vera, and is directed by Arturo San Agustin, and Real Florido.

Oro is a film that centers around a mining community that is threatened by an armed group. The community’s leader is tasked to defend the town, but struggles to do so when she fails to produce a permit to conduct mining activities. The movie also focuses on the effects on the members of the community despite the threats made by the armed group.

The movie stars Sandino Martin, Arrian Labios, Sue Prado, Cedrick Juan, and is directed by Alvin Yapan.

Saving Sally is not your typical Filipino romantic comedy movie as it infuses animation and live action movie.

The movie centers around Marty’s unrequited love towards his best friend Sally, and how Marty sees the world around him.

Saving Sally stars Rhian Ramos and Enzo Marcos. The movie is directed by Avid Liongoren.

The official synopsis of the movie reads:

“In 1947 those aspiring to be a priest are sent to a remote convent to live in seclusion (seklusyon) on the last day of their training. The purpose is to shield them from the evil of the world. The plot thickens when a mysterious young girl comes to the convent but the question is whether she is really sent by God or by the devil. This is the challenge that awaits the candidates.”

The movie is directed by the master of Filipino horror movies, Erik Matti.

Seklusyon stars Rhed Bustamante, Neil Ryan Sese, Ronnie Alonte.

Sunday Beauty Queen is a Filipino documentary that follows Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong as they embark to take part in an annual beauty pageant.

The documentary is directed by Baby Ruth Villarama.

Vince, Kath & James is a teen romantic movie that is based on the viral online posts on Facebook that captured the imaginations and hearts of the Filipinos early 2016.

The movie stars Julia Barreto, Joshua Garcia, Ronnie Alonte, and directed by Theodore Boborol.

Combatron Videogame Announced at ESGS 2016!

Here’s a blast from the past for all you 90’s kids! Funny Komiks’ classic character Combatron is getting a videogame!

At the recently concluded ESGS 2016, local studio Ranida Games took to the stage to announce that they are currently developing a videogame based on  the familiar blue cyborg, Combatron. The character rose to popularity in the early 90’s when its stories were published in the local comicbook serial, Funny Komiks. The komiks tells the tale of a young boy named Empoy who inherits a powerful cybernetic armor from an injured alien warrior called Combatron. Empoy also takes the mantle of the fallen warrior and fights evil alien invaders looking to subjugate the Earth.

Combatron’s creator Berlin Manalaysay has already given his approval in using the character and will working closely with the team at Ranida Games to make sure the game will be as good and as true to the original comicbook as it can possibly be.

At the moment, Ranida Games hasn’t disclosed what genre the game is going to be so we’ll have to keep an ear out for news and bring you updates when we get it. For now, enjoy this teaser trailer that Ranida has released featuring sample art of how the graphics of the game might look like.
